The Section 508 Refresh and WCAG Alignment
In January 2017, the U.S. Access Board published a final rule updating the Section 508 standards. This update, known as the “Section 508 Refresh,” harmonized the standards with other guidelines and standards both in the U.S. and abroad, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.
Key Changes in the Refresh:
- WCAG 2.0 Incorporation: The refresh incorporates WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA Success Criteria.
- Broad Application: Applies to all content, including web, software, electronic documents, and multimedia.
- Mobile Accessibility: Addresses the accessibility of mobile applications.
- Functional Performance Criteria: Updated to cover features of products or technologies not addressed by technical requirements.
